The Legend !
Alaska has always been a beautiful place. Home of the sled dog races, it has been a fun place to live. This legend begins thousands of years ago, when Alaska was much, much colder. People actually lived only in igloos and sled dogs races still took place. Only there was one small difference. Wolves were used instead of dogs. Men would spend all year training and captivating their team of wolves to take on the race.
One man, Kinou, planned that this special year would be his last race ever. Kinou was known around the town as the wolf singer, for when he sang it would sound like wolf howls. And he would always sing his special song. He spent extra time training his wolves and taming them for the big race. Taming would be an understatement. Kinou spent every waking moment with his wolves and promised them that he would win the race. Kinou believed in the wolf spirit that watched out for all the wolves and dogs in the world. Kinou thanked the wolf spirit for giving him these wolves to race with, and he promised that his wolves would win and be honored by the wolf spirit.
Time flew by and it was soon time for the great race. Kinou was more then ready and prepared all of his wolves, but mostly he prepared his lead wolf, Ahktar. The big day was exciting, seeing everyone with their tamed wolves, getting ready to race hundreds of miles across the Alaskan snow fields. The race took off and Kinou was in the lead for several days. One night though, his lead wolf disappeared, not knowing what else to do, Kinou settled down for the night.
He thought through of what to do, but there wasn't anything. Kinou would need a miracle. None of his other dogs could lead, only the special Ahktar could. Kinou asked the wolf spirit for a miracle, any miracle, to help him get out of here and finish the race. Soon after his wish, he fell into a deep sleep. When Kinou awoke, he was shorter then before, and itchy. Looking down at his feet, he saw paws. Looking in a melted ice puddle, he saw the face that resembled his only slightly, but now he was a black wolf.
Since Kinou had left his wolves on the sled as they slept, he woke them up and slid himself into the lead position. All of the wolves finished the race, and Kinou was ecstatic, but the town wondered what had happened to Kinou. Only one man picked up on what happened to the wolf singer. He noticed those gray eyes in the wolf that were the same as Kinou's and the black wolf that hadn't started the race. This man tried to tell the town that THIS was Kinou, a few people believed him, but most didn't.
Kinou and is wolves fled into the woods. Three hundred years later, Kinou died and the old wolf spirit went to join the others through the stars. Kinou was the new wolf spirit. Sometimes he would take the form of a man, sometimes a wolf, sometimes he was just the wind in the trees.
The people who believed that Kinou had shifted into a wolf swore that they heard his special song and his strange voice in the forest, only to be followed by the howls of many wolves....
Present day
Through out the years that Kinou was the wolf spirit, he gave this shifting power to about one hundred people. The people all realized that they were shapeshifters and could shift into animals. All of them picked an animal they chose to be. As they grew older, they got married and had kids. Every kid of a shifter, has the power too.
In the small town of Chiteau, Alaska, which houses only about 4,000 people, shifters exist among them. Most people don't know about them. The shifters don't want humans to know because scientists will try to capture them. Can you keep your secret safe?
